Set in South East London, Birds, Bars and Beats brutally explores what goes on throughout one weekend of four council flat residents. Structurally, the play explores a time frame of 23 years. The scenes with Bird and Geez (mother and father) in Act 1, take place 23 years before those of their children, showing glimpses into the world in which their children have been born. As Kat, the daughter goes on a painful journey of self exploration, Ted her brother is also faced with demons, which he tries to suppress through his drug habit. At the heart of the work lies the question to what extent are we a product of our environment? It is a play about searching and escape.Themes of birth, responsibility, sex, drugs, abuse and cycles are also addressed.
